“Our guidance on Sleepio provides GPs and their patients with evidence-based recommendations on a digital treatment option for insomnia” .Jeanette Kusel, acting director for MedTech and digital.
Hundreds of thousands of people struggle with sleep and are dependent on sleeping pills. These pills have secondary effects, create dependency and cost thousands of pounds to the health service.
Insomnia is one of the mayor “diseases” affecting developed countries. It is attributed to stress, modern life habits, illnesses, nutrition and other factors. Insomnia also causes disruption in the work place and financial loses. Lack of good sleep may also shorten lifespan, quality of life, and induce illnesses.
A Team of innovators have developed Sleepio. Sleepio is an app, and an effective alternative for the first time, saving the NHS cash and reducing prescriptions of drugs which can be addictive.
The app uses an artificial intelligence algorithm to provide people with tailored digital cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia (CBT). The program which is clinically proven, runs six online weekly sessions, involving a sleep test, weekly interactive CBT sessions and keeping a diary about your sleeping patterns.
The diary can be filled manually or the data can be automatically uploaded from a compatible wearable device. We can recommend Fitbit wiristband.
The wristband tracks movement and sleep, information that can be downloaded on your smartphone and online in your Sleepio account. Any other extra information can be added into the diary along with any personal experiences.
The ultimate goal is to improve your sleep. Clinical trials have shown that Sleepio is more effective at reducing insomnia than sleep hygiene and sleeping pills.
In order to be prescribed this treatment, you can reach your GP and ask for recommendation.
Participants can also access electronic library articles, online tools, and join the online Sleepio user community for support.
